What an end to May? The glorious hot sunny weather has brought all sorts of problems for us not least for the staff at the nurseries faced with almost continual watering and for some a battle to time our hydrangea plants for the Gardeners World Live Exhibition at the NEC from Wednesday to Sunday 2010 With the very warm and mainly dry week before the late spring bank holiday weather we now have some of the best planting conditions for years and there are several good opportunities not to be missed. Early June is traditionally the mass planting of bedding plants season but there are other groups of plants that will readily establish from a June planting. That is provided that you are prepared to keep plants moist for, in some cases several months. June is great for planting Clematis I encourage you to plant some of the newer cultivars. You will find a good selection of both old and new clematis in our climbing section along with the latest cultivars bred especially for use in pots. These patio type clematis will tolerate being grown in large cool pots of terracotta or wooden planters. Pale coloured Clematis generally need reasonable sunlight while the stronger coloured forms will tolerate the brightest of light, they will also grow in more shade. Please remember as a general rule, clematis prefer their roots in the shade. |
