Salvias

Salvias at Ashwood

Here at Ashwood we offer a wide selection of salvias that are all grown here on the nursery. We are passionate about salvias and we are delighted that both of our exhibits at the RHS London Flower Shows were awarded Gold Medals. There are over 900 species of salvias distributed throughout the world, a large proportion of which come from Mexico and South America. Here at Ashwood we grow around 80 varieties of these New World salvias. Our main specialities are the microphylla, x jamensis and greggii species but we also have a comprehensive range of other species and cultivars.

If you are able to visit us from late spring to the end of summer you will find our salvias imaginatively displayed in our inspirational sales area and see many of them growing in our beautiful nursery show garden. You will discover that salvias are a captivating genus of plants with a great diversity of flower colour, form and foliage. You can choose from the easy hardy microphylla, x jamensis, involucrata and patens varieties, the colourful and highly aromatic half-hardy greggii cultivars, or the exotic and showy tender varieties. Their colour range is outstanding; intense blues, vibrant scarlets, soft yellows, apricots, pinks and even the occasional black. Surprisingly there are only a few salvias with white flowers.

Salvias come into their own in mid-summer and continue their colourful display throughout autumn when many other plants are looking tired after a long summer. They are so versatile and work well in a variety of situations. They are excellent subjects for a sunny mixed border, mixing happily with shrubs and English roses, or they can be used in a traditional herbaceous border where the taller salvias are invaluable. Salvias are equally at home in a summer bedding scheme with half hardy annuals, or used in summer patio pots with geraniums and fuchsias. For the more adventurous gardener, try them in a sub tropical border where you will find that they are perfect companions for exotic subjects such as cannas, bananas and ginger lilies.

If you need more ideas on how to use salvias in the garden, why not visit on one of ‘John’s Garden Open Days’ in July or September and you will see how the nursery owner John Massey has used salvias to stunning effect in his own private garden.
