Heathers - Erica stuartii / Erica tetralix / Erica vagans / Tree Heathers

We offer container grown plants, some of which are in short supply or seasonal, but will be readily available to order if not on sale. Other varieties not listed may be available to order , please ask. The usual flowering period and ultimate height of each cultivator are indicated immediately after the name.

 

Erica stuartii

A natural hybrid between Erica mackaina and Erica tetralix. Has urn-shaped flowers throughout the summer and autumn. Needs a moist soil.

'Irish Lemon'

Large mauve flowers from May until September. Lemon-yellow new growth in spring, which persists until after flowering starts. Neat rounded habit. Height 25cm (10ins).

'Irish Orange'

Lilac-pink flowers from June until September. Green foliage tipped orange in spring. Height 25cm (10ins).

 

Erica tetralix

The cross- leaved heath is very hardy, and prefers a cool, moist position, but will flourish in almost any soil, providing there is no trace of lime. The flowers are carried in clusters over a long period.

'Alba Mollis'

White flowers from June until October. Grey-green foliage, tipped silver-grey. Compact upright habit. Height 20cm (8ins).

'Con Underwood'

Magenta flowers from July until November. Grey-green foliage. Height 25cm (10ins).

'Pink Star'

Lilac-pink flowers from July until October. Grey-green foliage. Height 20cm (8ins).

'Ruth`s Gold'

Pink flowers in August and September. Yellowish foliage in spring and summer, becoming lime-green with gold tips later. Height 20cm (8ins).

 

Erica vagans

The Cornish heath make a vigorous, spreading shrub with attractive flowers in late summer and early autumn. The faded flowers add colour in winter, with shades of brown and russet. It prefers an open sunny position in any well drained soil. It will require pruning each spring to keep plants in shape.

Deep bright rose-pink flowers from August until November. Dark green foliage. Height 30cm (12ins).

White flowers from August until November. Mid-green foliage. Vigorous. Height 40cm (16ins).

Shell-pink flowers from August until October. Mid-green foliage. Height 25cm (10ins).

Deep rose-pink flowers from August until October. Dark green foliage. Height 30cm (12ins).

Deep pink flowers from August until October. Dark green foliage. Compact spreading dome. Height 20cm (8ins).

Clear pink flowers from August until November. Dark green foliage. Height 20cm (8ins).

'Valerie Proudley'

Sparse white flowers from September until November. Bright yellow new growth on dull gold older foliage. Height 15cm. (6ins).

Pale pink flowers from August until October. Yellow foliage, deepening to golden-yellow in winter. Height 40cm (16ins).

 

Tree Heathers

The tree heathers provide flower colour usually from March until May, when very few other heathers are in flower. If cut back by frost, or broken by wind or snow, they should be pruned back hard, and the young growths allowed to develop from the base. The ultimate height shown will take some years to attain. Some varieties of tree heathers are in short supply, and maybe only available occasionally.

Erica arborea 'Albert`s Gold'

Slightly scented white flowers from March until May. Yellow foliage all year, being the brightest in winter and spring. Tall, open habit. Height 200cm (80ins).

Erica arborea 'Estrella Gold'

White flowers in April and May, above compact, lime-green foliage, tipped bright yellow . Broad habit. Height 120cm (48ins).

Erica x veitchii 'Exeter'

Sweet scented white flowers from March until May. Light green foliage. Very floriferous. Height 80cm (32ins).
