Fruit: Gooseberries - Blueberries - Figs

Gooseberries 

Gooseberries fruit on spurs formed on the old wood. After planting prune out unwanted branches, trim back the leading branches by about one-third their length and cut back the laterals to three of four buds. The aim is to train the bush to open in the centre.

`Hinnonmaki Yellow`

Pale green berries suitable for cooking/eating. Harvest in mid-July. Spacing (4ft) 1.4m apart.

'Ivicta' (PBR)

A vigorous heavy cropping variety that produces large pale green fruits. These are ideal for cooking and jam making. Harvest in late July.

`Leveller`

Greenish yellow berries for cooking or eating. Spacing (5ft) 1.5m apart. Harvest late July.

`Martlet`

Suitable for eating or cooking. Harvest in July. Spacing 1.22m (4ft) apart.'Pax': (PBR) Produces medium sized sweet, red berries that are harvested during July.

'Whinhams Industry'

A reliable variety that produces large to medium sized berries that have an excellent flavour. Harvest in late July. Ideal for eating or cooking.

 

Blueberries

Little pruning is required, however any dead wood should be removed and after some years the very old wood should be removed..

Blue Crop

(Harvest mid-July to mid-August) A very good hardy variety. The large, firm, pale blue berries have a sweet flavour. To ensure pollination plant more than one variety.

 

Figs

All new shoots should be stopped when they are four or five leaves long, this should only be done before the end of June. In April cut out any dead or diseased wood then cut back alternate young shoots to one bud.

A curious fruit which needs its roots restricting to reduce plant vigour and encourage fruit, this can be done by planting in a 15 inch pot or lining the sides of the planting hole with brick or wood. Small embryo figs forming in september will not be ripe until the following summer. Winter protection of the soft shoot and embryo fruits is essential. Add 2oz of fish, blood and bone when planting. Do not feed for three or four years while the main framework is being built up.

'Brown Turkey' AGM

A deciduous tree that should have its roots restricted when planting. This encourage it to produce fruit rather than more leaf growth. Large brown pear-shaped fruits can be harvested in August and September.

`Violetta Normande` (PBR)

Sweet flavour. Harvest August and September. Spacing 12ft apart.

`Osborn`s Prolific

Rich sweet flavour. Harvest August and September. Spacing 12ft apart.

`Rouge de Bordeaux`

Sweet flavour. Harvest August and September. Spacing 12ft apart.
