Anemone pavonina are another firm favourite at Ashwood and we are thrilled with the fine colours that we have introduced as a result of our intensive breeding programme. If you have visited the Mediterranean in early spring and walked through olive groves or over grassy hillsides, you will almost certainly have come across Anemone pavonina, or maybe one of its close relatives Anemone coronaria. (The differences are not great, and they may well have hybridised). It is from these origins that our strain of anemones has been selected. The exact provenance is not certain, with characteristics appearing from both forms, but together they make an exciting and colourful range of spring flowering anemones. They are stunning in the mixed border or when naturalised in grass. If you visit us in spring, you will find them growing in our beautiful nursery show garden. Alternatively if you are able to visit 'John’s Private Garden' in late spring, you will see how the nursery owner, John Massey, has created a wonderful Anemone pavonina meadow. We feel sure you will also be impressed with the inspirational displays in our sales greenhouse where you can select your plants for sale. We offer a superb selection of colours including salmon, scarlet, cerise, rose pink, shell pink, purple and white. All have a wonderful dark purplish-black boss in the centre of each flower. Amazingly some flowers will even change colour as they mature: most spectacular of all is a fine Ashwood selection called ‘Grecian Sunset’, whose flowers change from soft primrose yellow to a glowing rose coral. The flowering stems of Anemone pavonina can reach 30-45cm (12-18ins) and are produced from late February until well into April. All are available as both flowering-size plants and as seed.
