Hydrangeas : Other species and cultivars

Hydrangea. anomala subsp. Petiolaris AGM

‘The Climbing Hydrangea’ is a vigorous, woody, deciduous climber, which clings by aerial roots. Dark green, rounded leaves, and in summer has masses of white lace-cap flowers. Needs a moist soil to thrive. Any aspect. Hardy. Height 7-10m (20-30ft).

Hydrangea arborescens

   "  ‘Annabelle’ AGM

Very large, ball shaped heads of dainty, pure white flowers. Best in a cool moist soil in a partly shaded position. Superb as a small standard tree. Flowers will need staking if you prune hard. Height 1.2-1.8m (4-6ft).

   "  ‘Bounty’

A striking hydrangea with huge rounded creamy-white flowers heads in summer. Height 1m-1.5m (3-5ft).

   "  ‘Hayes Starburst’ (PBR)

A striking new form with panicles of green buds turning to white, double flowers in July. Height 1-1.2m (3-4ft).

Flat heads of creamy white flowers held above glaucous foliage, white on reverse. Height 1.2-1.5m (4-5ft).

    "  ‘Mauvette’

Medium sized shrub with heads of mauve-pink flowers in summer. Height 1-1.2m (3-4ft).

   "  subsp. sargentiana

Very large, velvety green leaves. Bluish lacecaps with white ray florets. Requires shade. Height 2.4m (8ft)

Hairy stems and bold hairy foliage, lilac blue lace cap like flowers in summer. Height 1.8m (6ft).

   "  ‘Darts Little Dot’

A medium sized shrub with large creamy white sterile florets in late July. Height 1.2-1.5m (4-5ft)

Glossy leaved shrub with many ray florets that turn pink with age. Height 1.8-2.4m (6-8ft).

Large trusses of pointed panicles of white flowers in summer, fading to a deep pink flush. Height 1.8-2.4m (6-8ft)

Large, pointed panicles of white flowers in summer, fading to a deep pink flush. Height 1.5-1.8m.

Hydrangea quercifolia

   "   ‘Alice’

Vigorous shrub of medium size, white flowers in upright panicles turning pink as they age. Height 1.5-1.8m (5-6ft).

Creamy white flower heads over bold oak leaf like foliage. Height 1.5-1.8m (5-6ft).

    "  ‘Little Honey’

A real stunner! Bright golden-yellow, oak leaf-like foliage. Best in some shade. Height 1-1.2m (3-4ft).

    "  ‘Pee Wee’

A compact form, with smaller oak shaped leaves than the species and erect, creamy white flower spikes. Good autumn colours. Moist loamy soul in sum or part shade. Height 1m (3ft).

Pure white, double flower heads, sterile florets turning pink. Striking ruby-purple autumn tints. Height 1.5m (5ft).

Hydrangea seemannii

An evergreen climber. Green leaves, and in summer has white flowers. Self-clinging. Good for a sunny, or semi-shaded wall. Height 3-5m (9-15ft).
